Classroom Lesson: Cooperation/Teamwork (1st)
GOAL: Students will understand the importance of cooperation with others. Students will understand what it takes to be a team player.

OBJECTIVES:
  1. Review Warm Fuzzies, Pricklies (hooks), Stop, Think, Pick a Plan
  2. Define teamwork
  3. Be able to be a team player

MATERIALS: Stop light, plans, What a Team by Fran Shaw (ISBN: 7944-1351-X), star glasses, teamwork/cooperate sign, work together sign, teamwork rules, pom poms, stopwatch, 4 small puzzles, overhead markers, wipes.

PROCEDURE:
  • Review previous lesson and practice the stop light by giving a cold prickly and then choosing a student to do the traffic light and pick a plan – reveal plan after it has been chosen.
  • Brainstorm a list of teams.
  • Divide students into teams and pick four Star Observers. Explain that their job is to watch their team, but don’t say or help in any way. Time the students as they put the puzzle together.
  • Stop students and have observers discuss what they saw happening.
  • Read together What a Team.
  • Together make a T Chart of what teamwork Looks Like and Sounds Like. Allow teams to complete the puzzles again and have observers look and listen. Discuss what was different this time.
  • Pick 2 sign holders and 2 cheerleaders. Divide in half and practice the cheer “Teamwork” “Work Together
